The All India Medical Entrance exams are conducted for admissions in undergraduate medical and dental courses across the nation. It is held to provide admissions to Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) courses.

Initially this month, a proposal was made to extend the five-and-a-half-year-long MBBS course to six-and-a-half-year-long course, which would include a compulsory one-year rural posting. This had risen heckles of medical students. The students of various colleges had protested outside Nirman Bhawan against the proposal. When they tried to enter the Nirman Bhawan to meet Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the police lathicharged them and even doused them with water cannons to disperse the protesting students. The students decided to go on a strike after lathicharge left many injured.
